Neuropathology diagnoses and landscape across the Hispanic/Latino spectrum Lead Investigator: Brittany Dugger Institution : University of California Davis E-Mail : bndugger@ucdavis.edu Proposal ID : 1112 Proposal Description: The long-term goal of our research is to understand the heterogeneity of Alzheimer?s disease (AD) and related disorders to provide optimal diagnosis and treatment for all individuals affected by these devastating diseases. The knowledge base of neuropathology of neurodegenerative diseases is largely based on non-Hispanic Whites there is nearly a complete lack of neuropathologic studies of Hispanics despite the large and growing representation of this group in the older adult population within the US. While neuropathologic studies of Blacks exist, there still is limited knowledge of the neuropathologic substrate of dementia in other ethonoracial groups. Strong clinical evidence finds that both Hispanic and Black adults have higher risk of developing dementia and evidence of greater frequencies of cardiovascular lesions, suggesting that neuropathology of dementia in those groups might differ from patterns characteristics of non-Hispanic Whites. Our objectives of this study are to 1) Understand the Clinical-Neuropathological diagnostic frequencies across Hispanic/Latino cohorts within NACC and 2) determine if they differ from other ethnoracial groups. In order to accomplish this goal we seek to examine NACC data on all Hispanic decedents who have come to autopsy with neuropathological data. We will frequency match these cases on a 2:1 basis with non-Hispanic whites for sex, age, and education. As some diagnostic entities were not adequately recorded in prior neuropathology datasets, we also request the names of the ADCs who contribute to the NACC Hispanic Cohort, and their contribution (excluding the UC-Davis ADC) as so we can contact them for tissues.
